EU amends the list of flavouring substances approved for use in foods

 

EU has recently published Commission Regulation (EU) 2016/637to amend the Union List (UL) of flavouring substances approved for use in foods (Annex I, Part A to Regulation (EC) No 1334/2008).

 

The new regulation makes the removal of 4 flavouring substances from the UL of flavouring substances approved for use in foods as follows:

According to EFSA (European Food Safety Authority), these substances were additionally concluded as “potential safety concern (genotoxity).  And, the survey revealed that they are no longerused in EU, sothe industry do not supported fortheirsafetyassessment anymore.

 

The regulation will come into force, the 20thday following the publication,so these substances will be officially prohibited in EU on13 May 2016.

 

However, it is allowed for transition period that foods containing the mentioned 4 flavouring substances that were on the market or imported into the Union from the third country before 13 May 2016, maybe marketed until their date of minimum durability or use by date.
