The ASEAN Expert Group on Food Safety (AEGFS) held their sixth meeting in Makati City, Phillipines from 23rd to 25th January 2008, under the chairmanship of Mr. Joshua G. Ramos, Director III of the Bureau of Food and Drugs, Department of Health, Philippines. With a total of 8 from 10 ASEAN countries in attendance.
During the meeting, the following issues were discussed and noted .
1. Common issues in ASEAN Cooperation i.e. new developments in ASEAN Coopertaion, Status on Implementation of the Vientiane Action Programme (VAP) measures on food safety , food safety projects financed by ASEAN Australia development Cooperation Programme Regional Partnerships Scheme and Program stream (AADCP-RPS and AADCP-PS) as well as ASEAN Food Safety Forum and other matters.
2. The progress and achievements in the implementation of the ASEAN Food Safety Improvement Pan (AFSIP) especiallly in some areas of
- The Programme on Food Inspection and Certification and discussed the possibility for funding this project by FAO.
- Information sharing Programme, the meeting considered the templates of ASEAN Food Safety Network (AFSN) website (http://www.aseanfoodsafetynetwork.net) and agreed with some contents of AFSN and the possibility for the cooperation with relevant international organizations and linkage with ASEAN member countries.
- The Programme on Consumer Participation and Empowerment, the meeting felt that this project should be included in the existing work on nutrition by FAO.
- The Programme on Legislation and Framework on Monitoring and Surveillance, the meeting requested partner organization for funding this project.
- The Programme on Laboratory, the Meeting requested ASEAN Member States to provide inputs for further development
The meeting agreed to have their seventh meeting in Singapore in 2009.
The meeting also expressed their sincere appreciation to the Government of Phillipines for the warm hospitality and excellent arrangements made for the meeting.
